GROWTH CHART

BABY SHOWER GIFT GO-WITH

Baby shower invitations these days often come with where the parents-to-be are registered.  I often like to get a gift card from that store so that they can choose what they really want or really need out of the variety of items (as opposed to buying a package of burp cloths – not fun!).  A great Go-With for a new baby gift card is a handmade growth chart.  I have seen several of these on Pinterest and Etsy, but with a few easy to find supplies, you can make one on your own for much cheaper!

Here is what it can look like:

First you assemble the following items:

  • Burlap Ribbon (I used 5 ¾” wide)Growth Materials
  • Decorative 7/8” ribbon
  • Yard stick
  • Glue gun and glue
  • 1 plastic drinking straw
  • Black paint marker
  • Number stencils
  • Craft tags
  • Safety pins
  • Straight pins
  • 1/8” ribbon
  • marker
  • Decorative box for packaging

The hardest part happens first.  Once you get through this, it is easy sailing!

  • Measure out a 6 foot 3 inch piece of the burlap ribbon and cut.
  • At one end, fold 1” under creating a straight line and glue. This will create the bottom of your chart.DSC_0379
  • Position the yard stick along the left side of the ribbon with the 0 mark along the bottom seam you just created.
  • At every inch interval, place a straight pin in the burlap to mark where you will eventually draw your paint line.
  • Measure lines up to what will be the 6 foot mark.

That’s the hard part!  Now on to the decorating!

  • Counting from the bottom, go up to the 12 inch pin. Remove the pin.
  • Draw a thick line with your paint marker in from the side that is 1 ½ “ long.
  • Use the number stencil “1” and trace and color your number with the paint marker at the end of the line you created.DSC_0382
  • Count up to the 24inch pin and repeat same steps with the number 2. Continue with labeling the foot marks up to the 6 foot mark.
  • Now go back and create lines for the other inch marks. Those lines should be thinner than the foot marking lines and only about an inch long.  No stencil is needed for this part.
  • Allow for the paint to dry a few hours.

You will find a couple of extra inches at the top.  This is where you will put the ribbon to hang the chart on the wall.

  • Turn the chart over onto the non-painted side.
  • Place the straw across the top of the burlap and trim off any excess straw.

  • Cut a 24 inch long piece of the 7/8” ribbon.
  • Feed the ribbon through the straw from one end to the other.
  • Center the straw on the ribbon
  • Place a line of glue at the top of the burlap chart and glue the straw to the top back of the chart.
  • Once the glue has had a chance to set, begin rolling the straw down the burlap to cover the straw from being seen.
  • Place another line of glue at the place you want to stop and secure the straw to the burlap.
  • You have about 2 inches before you get to the 6 foot mark. Be careful not to roll too far!
  • After the glue has dried, tie the ends of the ribbon together in a bow that will serve as the hanger for the chart.

The heights on this chart are marked by pinning craft tags to the burlap at different age intervals.  Making the tags is easy.  You can make as many as you want to give!

  • On each tag, write “DATE” and “AGE” for the parent to be able to fill in in the future.
  • Cut 5” lengths of the 1/8” ribbon.
  • Feed on piece of ribbon through the circle of each safety pin and tie a bow.
  • Place a safety pin through the hole of each craft tag.

Now all that is left is to roll up the chart and place it along with the growth tags in a decorative box.  I found a burlap one at Hobby Lobby that worked really well.  I also found this little, painted wooden frame there that I used to put a title on the top of the box.  I also glued some extra ribbon around the box and tied it just to add a bit more decoration to the otherwise plain box.  I have also seen the charts put in more decorative boxes and even mini paint cans.  You can really do whatever you think will work best.  One important tip…Don’t forget to include the gift card!!  What a fun way to give a little something special to Go-With your awesome gift card!
