When hosting a party for kids, whether it be for a classroom event or a home celebration, there is one key to success…keep them busy! A well-planned party filled with interesting activities is the best way to do that. Here are some Party Planning Hints and a Party Planning Organizer to help you plan your next kid friendly party!
When I start to plan a party, I go through a kind of checklist (my Party Planning Organizer) to figure out my purpose, decide on my party elements, and organize my supply list. This also is so helpful if you are coordinating with other parents so you can divide the workload.
Party planning all begins, for me, with the theme. Why are you having a party? Birthday? Halloween? Winter Holiday? What might be a fun theme to go with that category?
Next, I decide on the party length. If you are planning this for your child’s class, you should first check with the teacher. Most schools have a set party timetable and you will need to fit your party into that slot. If you are planning for a party at home, 2 hours (or less) is usually a good amount of time for elementary aged children. Much of that also depends on which party elements you want to include in your party.
Now that you know how long you have, you need to decide what to do with that time! Here are some options. I have created some helpful hints for each of these areas for you!
- Food – helpful hints
- Games – helpful hints
- Crafts – helpful hints
- Finisher – helpful hints
- Favors/Teacher Gifts – helpful hints
The key is deciding which of these elements you would like to include. You don’t have to do them all! If you prefer games over crafts, then skip the craft. If you don’t want to include a snack, then don’t! Choose the elements that you are most comfortable with and I promise it will take off so much pressure!
Once you have your party elements, then you can begin to build the party activities. What kids of food or snacks can go with this theme? What games or crafts can you do based on your theme? Plan-it Mom has done all of this for you! Find the theme you want for your party purpose, and you will find a party plan with all the ideas, supply lists, and instructions you will need to make your party fantastic!
Don’t forget about the end of the party! There should always be a Finisher to your event…a key to getting the kids to wind down after all of the fun! Also, be sure to think about party favors or teacher gifts. That way everyone gets to go home with a reminder of the amazing party you hosted!
